Here’s a good article from the Federal Times about federal agencies instituting knowledge management practices to retain institutional knowledge from generation to generation.

“When you’ve seen the White House change occupants seven times over the course of your career, as the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Tyler Przybylek has, you become an expert at navigating shifting political climates.

Federal agencies are increasingly turning to online technology to hold on to the decades of knowledge that baby boomers will take with them as they retire in coming years. Officials fear that without robust knowledge-retention programs, agencies will lose details of their histories, or forget how certain programs worked and be doomed to repeat past mistakes.

Realizing this, the Energy Department agency asked Przybylek a month before he retired to share his insights with co-workers. So for two hours in March, the former chief operating officer and special adviser to the agency’s administrator told stories and offered advice on how to make sure the new political appointees in charge recognize one’s contributions and how to avoid being seen as resisting the administration’s priorities.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has established an on-line procedure called e-Allegations by which concerned individuals can report illegal import and export activity. Types of violations include misclassification of merchandise, false country of origin markings, health and safety issues, valuation issues, and intellectual property rights. Users may also remain anonymous when submitting an e-Allegation.

The U.S. government has a massive amount of information, but interestingly you may not have realized that there are many websites produced by the government that are no longer kept current. These sites can still be useful for historical research.

A partnership between the University of North Texas Libraries and the U.S. Government Printing Office, as part of the Federal Depository Library Program, was created to provide permanent public access to the Web sites and publications of defunct U.S. government agencies and commissions. The collection called CyberCemetery can be browsed or searched.

A very good list of how to kill a young librarian’s love of librarianship from babyboomerlibrarian
I’ve seen this in action. It’s not fun.

1. Do not allow out of the box thinking.
2. Award only those that maintain the status quo.
3. Blame people for failures.
4. Call young librarians “cute” and ignore what they can really do.
5. Tell them “NO.”
6. Do not allow new librarians to try out different duties. Limit them to only what is listed in their job description.
7. Maintain walls between departments.
8. Demand unquestioning trust in what you do.
9. Veteran librarians know best because that is the way it has always been done.

Produced by the ALA Government Documents Roundtable (GODORT), the State Agency Database is a wiki that attempts to bring all the government state databases in one place. From the wiki homepage…

In every US State and the District of Columbia, agencies are creating databases of useful information - information on businesses, licensed professionals, plots of land, even dates of fish stocking. Some of this content is available on search engines, but much of it is part of the invisible web.

In any event, no resource we’re aware of has tried to pull together all publicly accessible state agency databases until now. Eventually each state page below will have a page listing state government databases by agency. If this project gets a wily programmer, we can talk subject access or even federated search.

Federal Trade Commission - 4.10.08
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/04/dncfyi.shtm

Telephone numbers placed on the National Do Not Call Registry will remain on it permanently due to the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007, which became law in February 2008. More than 157 million phone numbers are on the National Do Not Call Registry. Under the Act, the Federal Trade Commission will continue to remove telephone numbers that have been disconnected and reassigned to other customers.

Consumers can delete their telephone numbers from the registry at any time by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) the call must be made from the telephone number they wish to delete.
